best colors for kitchens: furniture redo

I've just about wrapped up our oldest son's room redo but before I blog about it, I wanted to blog about a few pieces that I worked on for the room.  The first thing was the <a href="http://ourvintagehomelove.blogspot.com/2012/10/upholstered-headboard-tutorial.html">upholstered headboard</a> that I put together last week.  Next up is this dresser that was included in a truckload of things hubby bought at an auction.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2HpVIpvCS5rUK5lff1KN6dBf74Ek3wEzk2cqnu4fQmzP3zs4hMdxguZeQQsfcjehAvqNWpfVoU8lu8-VFPuS86jcccz11W1nzE460xjJyaXEPFZunAlXD1Z_d46NDzWjSeOTFluXdQCM/s1600/003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2HpVIpvCS5rUK5lff1KN6dBf74Ek3wEzk2cqnu4fQmzP3zs4hMdxguZeQQsfcjehAvqNWpfVoU8lu8-VFPuS86jcccz11W1nzE460xjJyaXEPFZunAlXD1Z_d46NDzWjSeOTFluXdQCM/s640/003.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br />It was a solid wood piece and in great condition, just needed a paint job and new hardware.  What I had in mind for the dresser was a very distressed, green, hand rubbed aged look.  So the first thing I did was paint it the same color that I<a href="http://ourvintagehomelove.blogspot.com/2012/08/big-kitchen-updates.html"> painted our french door in the kitchen</a>, which is called Spanish Green by Valspar.<br /><br />After it dried completely, I distressed it by sanding off a lot of the paint.  Then I rubbed on some dark walnut stain and rubbed it off.  Then rubbed on some grayish blue paint that I had but not sure of the name of, and then also rubbed that off.  I wanted several colors going on, if that makes any sense.<br /><br />The dresser also needed a hardware update but I didn't want to spend any money, so, I rummaged through our boxes of drawer pulls at our shop and found 3 sets that were very similar.  They didn't match completely but were the exact same shape in diameter so I grabbed them and took them home to spray paint them an oil rubbed bronze.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; Dresser Redo

I've just about wrapped up our oldest son's room redo but before I blog about it, I wanted to blog about a few pieces that I worked ...

<div style="text-align: center;">My hubby and I have been married for 20 years and for 20 of those years, I have longed for an old hutch, just like the one in my grandma's kitchen.  Every time we would come across one, it was too expensive or just wasn't exactly what we wanted.  My luck was about to change.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">While visiting a local flea market on Saturday, I walked to the back of the store and saw this.</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOv2FychUZDZWgosOKOUJXHVmEXRxzZEjZKnwYFjhRyL-6RhsV7D8ryQO3v_gZ7_LgVPQTuqqTMsBt1JzcCHDDGwDbhpB6EJEtralDoSdkwTjcKL1IUJg1ohOarCdVw8OeeoKvKNkmas8/s1600/004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOv2FychUZDZWgosOKOUJXHVmEXRxzZEjZKnwYFjhRyL-6RhsV7D8ryQO3v_gZ7_LgVPQTuqqTMsBt1JzcCHDDGwDbhpB6EJEtralDoSdkwTjcKL1IUJg1ohOarCdVw8OeeoKvKNkmas8/s640/004.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;">One look and I was immediately transported back to my grandma's kitchen.  The sounds, smells, and all the things I loved about her and her kitchen immediately came to mind.  When the owner came over to talk to me, all I could manage to say was, "I want this."  </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">I called my hubby and he came down to check it out.  We worked out a deal with the owners, packed it up and brought it home.  I was a happy girl.  :)</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Of course, it needed some work, but that's what I liked about it.  Although I liked the sunny yellow paint, it wouldn't really fit in with the decor in our home so I had to paint it white.  </div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYMEBQobNB49IeB2b1qqL8cTQE6Slj8UoMCFJi8ktDCDzRMIFNwRSUaxLgpEFX_CDiSEUx361trJTCE6LO2fEyEiXOUSgSFJLl-7ILGLYVsWn1XY74KH57my8ERkkjKKqhjW4YFmWf-pI/s1600/004a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLgYNAGXklxDBhiqsI5XuvAz_9Apgk6x380PwUDY0YysozHYnpeQ4jYYkmSxgs_cdn4C0Feu2iF_Wythk90JYdpBwyHzQw6aGDPgIlL5evaVPPr6mYyZK6hjMTXB8ISV6bw2qOYglb6_4/s1600/001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;">As you can see, there are gaps but that's why caulk is the best thing ever for a DIY'er.  It covers a multitude of sins.  I learned how to cut mitered corners and returns about 9 years ago and every time I cut them, I forget how and have to buy extra molding to practice on.  That whole thing of turning your molding upside down and cutting at 45 degrees confuses me every time.  I'm sure there is an easier way and possibly a better saw for the job but I don't know what it is.  After I caulked the gaps, and filled the nail gun holes with spackle, I started painting and adding the new door pulls.  </div><div style="text-align: center;">Here's how she looks now.</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both;
